Arrangements for New Students

We recognise the importance of a smooth transition and support by:

  • Sending a team of staff to visit all main partner primary schools.  This allows us to gather a detailed profile of every student and to talk to all students, providing them with instant answers to questions they may have.

  • Inviting all new students and parents to an individual interview with an experienced member of staff prior to arrival at Langley.  This enables us to answer any concerns and allows every student to overcome anxieties.

  • Providing a fully structured induction day in the summer to allow students to familiarise themselves with the school, meet their tutors and sample a variety of new subjects.  Following this, in the evening, parents are invited to school to meet the Headteacher, Head of Year and other key staff.

  • In addition, many are invited to attend a variety of summer school activities.

Pastoral Care

Central to everything that we do is our school rule of "courtesy and consideration to others at all times".  This sets a high standard of expectations of behaviour both in and outside school.

Our Pastoral care system recognises that daily care and support for all is essential for full social and academic development.  Central to this success is the key rĂ´le played by each year team.  Each is led by a Head of Year and supported by an excellent team of tutors committed to supportive pastoral care.

From the first point of contact the Pastoral team will support according to the needs of the individual.  Key elements of our highly successful pastoral system include:

  • High expectations of all: all of our students are expected to behave to a very high standard.  We value the way our students are supportive and courteous and that they appreciate the importance of appropriate behaviour at all times.  In the rare event that a student does not conform to these standards, an appropriate sanction will be applied with the aim of ensuring that the behaviour is modified and future incidents do not occur.

  • Commending achievement: commendation stars are awarded for a variety of achievements and an Awards ceremony is held for each year to celebrate publicly effort and achievement.

  • Continuity: each Tutor and Head of Year tracks the student's progress over the full five years, remaining with students from Year 7 to Year 11.

  • Communication: regular contact with parents is established through parents' consultation, reports and individual meetings where appropriate.  All students receive a Homework Planner, which is also a means of communication between school and home.

  • Sharing knowledge: all staff are informed of key information regarding each student's academic and social development.  The school has excellent links with, and uses, a variety of support agencies.

  • Partnership with Parents: we value the importance of working together and expect regular contact with parents.  We ask that parents arrange appointments when needed and ensure that any relevant information or concern is shared with the Head of Year.  Reports on students are issued regularly and a parents' evening with every subject teacher occurs each year.  We benefit from an active and supportive Parent Teacher Association, which arranges a number of social and fundraising events throughout the year, and a strong Governing Body led by Mr. P. Bates.

Special Needs Provision

Langley School has a Resource Centre for the provision of inclusive education for children with physical and sensory disabilities.  The process for admission is firstly that the LEA recognises the pupil has severe or complex needs related to physical or sensory disability, severe disfigurements and/or progressive conditions where impairments are likely to become, or are, substantial.  On that basis, a decision is made on the most appropriate educational provision for the pupil.  If considered appropriate the Headteacher is contacted at Langley School by the LEA with a request to make provision for the child concerned.  After due consultation with parents, the pupil, the LEA, other agencies e.g. Health and the previous school, and if a place is available then agreement is reached on the provision and the pupil is admitted onto the roll of the Resource Centre where we can take 16 pupils with physical disabilities.

We pride ourselves on the philosophy that students are recognised as individuals, each with their different strengths, weaknesses and individual learning styles.  Our outstanding results are achieved through a variety of initiatives including:

  • Detailed initial assessment in Year 7 to provide a full profile of every student's strengths, weaknesses and preferred learning style.

  • In Key Stage 3, numeracy and literacy needs are supported with small group structured teaching and peer support programmes, e.g. additional literacy lessons and a Paired Reading Scheme.

  • A member of staff who has the specific responsibility for supporting the needs of statemented pupils.

  • In Key Stage 4 a varied range of courses caters for all levels of ability, recognising the importance of the academic and vocational elements of a balanced curriculum.

  • Setting of groups, where appropriate, allows us to support.

Provision for the Gifted and Talented

The school is a member of Young, Gifted and Talented and benefits from the work of a Gifted and Talented Coordinators in the school.  Early identification (CAT tests), subject specific identification, individual support and extension, and creative timetabling provide the basis for our work in this field.  Master classes, summer schools, mentoring and early examination entry (whether GCSE or AS) are avenues pursued by the school.  Talent is identified early and encouraged, consistent with our philosophy of 'be the best you be'.

Extra-Curricular Activity

Langley School provides an education for its children that goes beyond the confines of the classroom and reaches out into the community.  There is a wealth of opportunity for children to engage in a range of activities.

During a typical week there is a choice of some 40 clubs for children to participate in.  These include everything from Jazz Band, Cross Country and Badminton to Art, Drama, Computers and Chess.  There really is something for everyone at Langley School, a point recognised by the Education Extra Trust which awarded us a Distinction for our wide range of extra-curricular activities.

Each year a number of trips and visits are arranged.  The on-site School Bank is available to assist children in saving.  School trips have included visits to Italy, Slovenia, France, Germany, USA and China.  There are also local visits to Solihull, Birmingham and Warwickshire, together with visits to London, Llandudno, Drayton Manor, Stratford and Alton Tower.

Children are encouraged to involve themselves in their community and a flourishing Charities Committee helps to raise funds.  In addition, 24 children participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, and many others in Maths Challenges, the Borough Swimming and Athletic Championships, the Kielder Challenge, concerts and productions supported by our flourishing Young Arts Leader Award.  At the end of the school year, over 120 children take part in our Summer Schools and some 300 children volunteer to take part in our Autumn Open Evening.

Sports Day involves the whole school in a thoroughly memorable afternoon at the Norman Green Centre.  There are also a variety of after-school sporting activities that pupils can opt for.  Other activities include Work Experience, an Equal Opportunities Day, Youth Speaks and Magistrate Court competitions.  The highlights of our year include the Summer and Autumn Awards Days when we celebrate the many achievements of Langley School children.
